A Small Sweet Shop

Handmade sweets and party favors, from a corner shop that has been at it a while.

A small family run confectionery on Rua Kaneda. Traditional Brazilian sweets, bonbons, party favors, and cakes to order, handmade in the shop kitchen.

About the shop

Salis Comercio de Doces e Salgados is a small family run confectionery in the Jardim Japão neighbourhood of São Paulo. We have been in the same corner shop on Rua Kaneda since August 2000, which is a long time in the sweet shop business.

The counter is straightforward. A case of traditional Brazilian sweets, made in-house from short lists of ingredients. A jar row of hard candies and bonbons for the walk-in customers. A small savory shelf for the days you came in hungry rather than sweet-toothed. And a chalk board where we write down the cakes and party trays going out that week.

Everything is made in the small kitchen at the back. Nothing comes in pre-packaged from a wholesaler. If a recipe has been in the case since we opened, it is still made the same way.

What is in the cases

Six sections, arranged the way a proper sweet shop should be.

i.

Traditional sweets

Brigadeiros, beijinhos, cajuzinhos, and the small round classics that Brazilian childhoods are built on. Made every morning in the shop kitchen.

ii.

Bonbons and candies

Filled chocolate bonbons, hard candies, jelly sweets, and lollipops arranged in a jar row by the front counter, for the walk-in customer.

iii.

Savory shelf

A short savory shelf for the customer who came in for something that is not sweet. Small pastries and bakery bites, restocked through the day.

iv.

Party favors

Custom party trays and favors for birthdays, showers, and family gatherings. Order at the counter, pick up on the day.

v.

Cakes to order

Layer cakes and celebration bakes, made to order. Give us a couple of days' notice and tell us how many the cake needs to feed.

vi.

Seasonal specials

A short list of seasonal sweets around Easter, Festa Junina, Christmas, and the odd family holiday. On the chalk board the week they arrive.

How we make

01

Small batches by hand

Everything in the cases is made in small batches in the kitchen at the back. Nothing is bought in from a wholesaler or a candy plant.

02

Recipes that stayed

The house recipes have been in the case since the shop opened. We have added a few over the years, but the classics are still made the same way.

03

Made the day it is sold

The cases are restocked through the day. If a tray sells out by mid-afternoon, that is how a small confectionery is supposed to work.

04

Family at the counter

The shop is run by the same family that opened it in 2000. The person you meet at the counter is the person who made what is in the case.
